Cottage (2000 sq. ft.) in Southwest Harbor, ME
0 miles from Bar Harbor
Fernald Cove Cottage is nestled in the woods at Water's edge on Fernald cove; 11 Connor Pt. Lane, Southwest Harbor, ME. A great getaway location, yet less than a mile from Town, shopping, restaurants, museums, and within walking distance of the Causway Club Golf/Tennis (open to the public), A short (~5 min) walk to Acadia National Park mountain hiking trails, Short drives to Bar Harbor, Whale watching, Fishing, Acadia Natl Park carriage roads, etc. Waters Edge Cottage is a large 2+ bedroom A-frame, 20 ft from Fernald Cove. It has a large living room overlooking the Cove, a bedroom with 2 twin beds on the first floor, a family/video room with a double hide-a-bed, kitchen, bath & shower, washer/dryer/microwave. Up a spiral staircase to an enormous master bedroom overlooking the cove, with queen bed, large bathroom & shower, desk & WIFI, and a rear deck to watch amazing sunsets. Rentals are seasonal, June thru September, weekly minimum, Saturday 3PM to Saturday 10AM. About Fernald Cove Cottage: Our cottage was once part of a large estate on Fernald Cove, which empties into Somes Sound. Your nearest neighbors are the Hays, who have a converted stable that is now a magnificent home. Our cottage sits at the waters edge to Fernald cove in 3 acres of woods. As the Cove is tidal, it empties at low tide. Kayaks and canoes are welcome, just watch out for low tide. It's a muddy walk back! Our cottage was once just two nice rooms with their own roofs, connected by a kitchen and bath. When we purchased it, we decided to enlarge it for our family of four, and the best way to conserve what we had was to convert it to the A-frame design you now see. We simply joined the two roof lines East and West by following the existing roof lines, and enclosed the area in between with a living room, plus an enormous master bedroom and bath up a spiral staircase to the newly created second floor. The end facing the cove has large glass windows, and the opposite end has a deck and rear stairs. More History: The timbers and floors in the expansion came from a distillery in Cincinnati, which was being taken down, and the lumber sold for just pennies / foot. The beams are 2 1/2 inches thick X 8, 10 or 12 inches wide, ~20 ft long, of southern yellow pine, an extremely hard and well seasoned wood. Some of the vertical supports are massive, and the floors and ceiling are 2 X 6 inch tongue and groove, ~ 20 ft long, as can seen as you go up the spiral stairway. We purchased the wood in Cincinnati, hauled it to our home there and spent weeks pulling out nails, until we had ~40,000 pounds of lumber which we hauled up to the cottage on a truck. We spent two years/summers building the addition, after having the foundation 'improved' (Had it redone again in 2012.) from original post supports. We used adjacent trees and block-and- tackle to hoist the beams in place; father & son (16). The support beams are bolted triples, and only intersect the original structure in two places, the closets And More: The metal supports were custom made by a blacksmith in Cincinnati, where we spend our winters. As father & son assembled the support structure, roof shingles purchased in Oregon as pre-assembled shingled panels, 2 ft X 8 ft, and let us put up the roof covering in a much shorter time. These were pre-coated with sealant by mother and daughter (12) by putting them through a trough, enabling a thorough coating of sealer and recovery of excess for the next panel. True family effort! The final shingling and vertical shingles were done by Norman Harkins Builders, to whom we owe a great deal of thanks, as we did not have time to finish before 'summer vacation' ended, returning to Cincinnati and work and school. Now we have a nice living room facing the cove, two bedrooms downstairs, (One we have converted to a TV room, DVD room really, as no real TV reception in the woods!) The second floor has a very large bdrm and bath/shower. Furnishings mostly from home. Hope you enjoy your stay!

House (2200 sq. ft.) in Southwest Harbor, ME
0 miles from Bar Harbor
Come stay the night in the gorgeous Harbor View rental in Southwest Harbor, Maine! Harbor View is located just minutes outside of downtown Southwest Harbor on a hill overlooking the beautiful port that gives the town it’s name. Enjoy a cup of coffee on the spacious porch while watching local lobster-fishermen leave the harbor beneath a Maine sunrise or maybe a refreshing cold beverage while admiring the view of the Cranberry Islands. Harbor View can hold eleven guests comfortably, making it perfect for a multiple family getaway, and several TVs and living areas make for wonderful nights together enjoying games and movies. The incredible location of Harbor View in what is known as “The Quietside” of Mount Desert Island is possibly the largest advantage of the property. Southwest Harbor used to be a small fishing village and retains a vibrant small-town fishing community. A five minute walk to downtown Southwest Harbor allows you to spend time exploring local restaurants and shops. The Quietside is packed with some of Acadia National Park’s most beautiful hiking trails and views, including the famous Bass Harbor Lighthouse, and the gorgeous lakes of Long Pond and Echo Lake, which are perfect for swimming during warm summer months. Harbor View is just a fifteen minute drive from downtown Bar Harbor and the countless restaurants that the town holds while also allowing you to avoid the overwhelming cruise ship traffic and packed atmosphere of Bar Harbor in the summer months. Southwest Harbor provides its own opportunities for both private boat rentals and fishing tours on the untouched waters in the Gulf of Maine. The core of the house itself was built in the 1920s and retains the historic style while more recent additions including a full second floor and kitchen seamlessly blend modern living with historic building design. The first floor contains a kitchen, equipped with all necessary appliances, a living room and two bedrooms, one with a twin and bunkbeds and one with a double. The living room displays wonderful panoramic views of the Harbor through windows that illuminate the entire downstairs in natural light. The upstairs has a living area of its own equipped with a TV and sleeper sofa. Two more bedrooms allow for more comfortable sleeping room and the views from the master are unbeatable anywhere else in the house.

Glorious sunsets, simple and inviting gardens, footpaths. Just steps to a picturesque typical Maine beach. Main house has spacious master suite including walk in shower with heated tile floors. This house has one floor with fully stocked kitchen, family room with floor to ceiling windows looking out on Penobscot Bay, vaulted ceilings, exposed natural wood beams, a centrally located wood stove fireplace perfect for a cold fall evening. Having friends join you for a few days….the fully furnished one bedroom apartment above the detached garage has a kitchenette, full bathroom, living area and queen size bed is perfect for guests. Charcoal grill for slow and relaxing dinners and an ocean side landscaped fire pit perfect for s’mores while you watch the stars. The house is on an island. there is a car ferry that runs between the mainland and the island every 30 minutes from 7 am to 5 pm 7 days a week and a smaller non car ferry that will run into the evening or anytime per request. Islesboro has 2 country stores with all the provisions one would need to make a 5 course meal. There are a few small shops and even a great place for ice-cream. The Island however does not have any restaurants so if you are looking for wild nights out its probably not the place. We have in the past taken the ferry back during the day and go to Camden for lunch and window shopping. The Island is famous for its large mansions that are owned by such Hollywood stars as John Travolta and Kristy Alley along with a smattering of hedge fund traders and bigwig lawyers. People come to Islesboro to get away from the crowds and recharge their batteries. It is tradition to give a wave while driving to fellow drivers and walkers! No pets or smoking please.

Cottage (1200 sq. ft.) in Sorrento, ME
0 miles from Bar Harbor
Looking for a quiet vacation place to rent early summer or fall? We have the perfect place for you-- our family vacation cottage on the beautiful Maine coast. The cottage is located in Sorrento, Maine, a small lobstering village that sits on a peninsula on Frenchman’s Bay and looks across to the mountains of Acadia National Park that rise out of the sea. Sorrento is located in Maine’s storied “Down East,” 13 miles north of the small city of Ellsworth and 25 miles from Bangor—about an 8-9 hour drive from the New York metro region or five hours from Boston--just far enough to get away from smog, noise and congestion and close enough to nature to hear the cries of gulls and loons, to sight bald eagles, osprey, foxes. Still a bargain on the Maine coast, the cottage sleeps up to 8 people—three bedrooms containing two queen beds, a bunk room with two beds, and two additional beds in the loft, two full baths, living and dining areas, kitchen with dishwasher, deck overlooking the bay, fireplace, wood stove for Spring and Fall, and full basement with washer and dryer. The house is fully furnished, including a library and linens - all surrounded by trees and the bay. Across the bay and a 40-minute drive is Mt. Desert Island, home to the jewel of our national park system, Acadia National Park, with its great hiking trails and a view of mountains, islands and sea from every summit, as well as the resort town of Bar Harbor with its myriad tourist attractions like whale watch tours, plays, concerts, restaurants, etc. Nearer still is Schoodic Peninsula, another part of Acadia National Park. Don’t count out the early summer or fall. These are quieter times for those who crave a real rest and with global warming heating up the planet these times are becoming more desirable. We rent usually from Sunday to Sunday on a weekly basis.

What you will love about this home Welcome to SpruceLedge, our little piece of paradise. SpruceLedge is located in the town of Tremont, Maine on the southwestern shore of beautiful Mount Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park. Our property consists of over 16.5 acres with about 750 feet of bold, shore frontage on Latty Cove with spectacular views across Blue Hill Bay. The name, “SpruceLedge” was chosen because the flora on the property is classic, coastal Maine spruce/fir forest on very shallow soils with granite ledge at or near the surface. Because the property faces southwest, the sunsets are breath-taking and the prevailing summer breezes keep the place pleasantly cool. We, the Smith Family, purchased the property in 1994 and the main house was constructed in the summer of 1995. The garage and guest quarters were added in 1997. the large post & beam barn added in 2010 and our new residence in 2019 SpruceLedge reflects our philosophy of simple elegance and modest living. Our desire is to create and nurture an informal atmosphere where our family and guests will feel comfortable and relaxed, a place where people can enjoy each other’s company or their own personal space in the natural beauty of the landscape. You can sit peacefully and experience the diurnal rhythms of the New England seashore or engage in numerous, energy demanding activities. Hiking, swimming, sailing, biking, kayaking, fishing, wildlife watching, napping in a hammock or soaking in the hot tub are all available for your pleasure. The main cottage contains a master bedroom and in suite bath, a large, enclosed loft that comfortably sleeps 4 young adults or children over 6, a den with an inflatable queen bed if needed, and sofa, a guest bedroom with twin beds (convertible into a king) and an expansive great room with the kitchen, dining & entertainment space. The guest quarters above the garage is a large, studio apartment with a fully equipped kitchen, bath, living area and furnished with a queen size bed. The property will comfortably accommodate two families and as many as 8 people. SpruceLedge has an expansive deck with a hot tub and several rockers from which to view the numerous species of aquatic wildlife including seals, porpoises, loons, eagles, osprey and the elusive Maine lobsterman. It also has a dock from which you can cast a fishing line or take a refreshing, ‘bone-chilling’ dip in the frigid North Atlantic. There are also 2 adult and 2 children mountain bikes for enjoying the private roads or the 56 miles of carriage paths in Acadia National Park. What you will love in the neighborhood Mount Desert Island (MDI) is the third largest island in the continental US. (It is all of 8 acres smaller than Martha’s Vineyard, MA.) The bedrock of the island is granite, which was scraped bare in many places by the last great glacier over 100,000 years ago. MDI has 17 named mountains ranging in height of 200 feet to over 1500 feet on Cadillac Mountain. It has several fresh water lakes and ponds (some of which are wonderful for swimming) and it is surrounded by dozens of smaller islands. The sailing and boating in the area is truly magnificent. Over half of the island is in the boundaries of Acadia National Park and the town of Bar Harbor is located on the northeastern shore. The locals refer to the western part of MDI as the ‘backside’ or the ‘quiet side’. The ‘back side’ is certainly quaint and feels far from the bustling crowds and curio shops of Bar Harbor. There are a multitude of activities to enjoy in the immediate area including hiking on the hundreds of miles of trails, biking, sailing, fishing, swimming, boating, whale watching, golfing at 3 nearby courses, sightseeing in Acadia Park or simply watching the world float by. Shopping and dining is plentiful in Southwest Harbor or Bar Harbor, which is only 12 miles away. At SpruceLedge you will hear no road noise nor will artificial lights interrupt your night sky. Except for the lobster boats and your own clamor, the only sounds you will hear will be the wind, the waves and the shorebirds. Additional information It sits on a very private cove and a small beach. It is on the same large island as the magnificent Acadia National Park It's set on over 15 acres and 735 feet of bold shore frontage with spectacular views of the outer islands and sunsets over Blue Hill bay. Its' private setting on Latty Cove is conducive to peaceful relaxation and numerous water activities. There is a mooring available if you have a boat. There are many activities to enjoy in the area, including hiking, golfing, swimming, and biking. Shopping and dining is plentiful in Southwest Harbor which is 5 miles away

Northwood is the Maine home in the woods that you dream about. Located on beautiful Long Pond, endless fishing, swimming and kayaking awaits you just steps from the front door. After an active day you will want to relax and enjoy cocktails and sunsets from the huge wrap around porch. The house has four bedrooms, two baths and sleeps 8-10. There are two bedrooms on the first floor, one main with a queen bed and a sliding door that opens onto the wrap around porch. The other first floor bedroom is smaller and has a queen bed with views out toward the woods. Each bedroom has an open stairway leading to the bedrooms above. This is a quirky design of our house which does not provide a lot of privacy; guests staying in the upper bedrooms will walk through the downstairs bedrooms to get to their rooms and use the bathrooms. The two upstairs bedrooms each have two twin beds. Both rooms have windows that look out over the lake as well as windows that look toward the woods. The upstairs bedrooms connect to each other with a door. Again, these bedrooms have open staircases that lead to the bedrooms below. The loft has a pullout couch that sleeps two and has views of the lake. There are two full bathrooms, one with a shower tub and the other with a shower stall. The kitchen has an oven, microwave, toaster, blender, drip coffee maker, mixer and all the usual kitchen utensils. The stove top is an electric four burner Jenair. The refrigerator is a side by side with an icemaker and water in the door. There is a screened-in porch that opens off the kitchen. 3 Kayaks are available for you to enjoy (life jackets provided as well). Kayaks can be launched right off of the dock. Beech Mountain is just up the road offering a quick hike with beautiful views of Long Pond, and the south end of Mt. Desert Island. Northwood is located closest to Southwest Harbor where you can find groceries, restaurants and shopping. Briar Rose by the Sea and adjacent guest house, Ariel's Grotto, is for LARGE GROUPS overlooking ACADIA NATIONAL PARK It includes Belle's Bunk House (2 futon bunk beds that sleep 6) for those more adventurous, AND The Pirate rooms have dormitory sleeping (futon bunk beds GALORE) and TV's! Sleeper sofas, and futons are in living rooms! We have sleeping arrangements to fit your large group! ALL on the Sea's edge and adjacent to each other. What a wonderful beach for your family! It is minutes from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Huge yard for your family activities and the water facing deck can hold and seat everyone in your party. If you have a large group vacation planned, this is the place. The beach area is clear of large rocks and is a beautiful pebble/sand beach-- a hard find on the rocky coast of Maine! Couple this with the mountain views and the Atlantic ocean and you will want to return here every year. . This is the ONLY property you will find to accommodate large groups with 2 separate residences and a bunk house!!! All on one large property with over 300 FT of BEACH FRONTAGE and a HUGE lawn for family activities AND a HUGE Cedar Works Pirate themed playground!!! I Must Go Back to the Sea Again...: You will want to return year after year to this very special spot. There are a lot of rentals to choose from, but none like this. Accommodating large groups with beautiful grounds and beach so close to Acadia and overlooking the mountains of Acadia combined with the deep water frontage make this a one of a kind vacation spot and THE PLACE for Family reunions and large groups! Make Sure you have Deep Water frontage--Not Tidal!: This is deep water frontage. Don't be fooled by houses 'located on the ocean' that have tidal frontage. Tidal frontage means you have nothing but mud (and a foul smell!) when the tide goes out and the water disappears. True deep water frontage means you will still have deep water even when the tide is out. Many properties listed in Trenton Maine have tidal frontage--don't be fooled by a good price! Several Golf Courses are nearby: Bar Harbor Golf course is just minutes away and down the road to Bar Harbor you will find the famed 'Kebo Valley' golf course. There's a Summer Place...: This is truly an exceptional property with a breathtaking view of the ocean with the backdrop of the mountains of Acadia National Park. A deep water mooring is provided should you wish to sail or boat during your stay here. Spend your days combing the beach for starfish, sand dollars and pretty colored shells and sea glass. The beach is cleared of large rocks (something no one is allowed to do anymore) which is a hard find on the rocky coast of Maine. Couple this with the smell of the sea and a warm summer breeze and you will want to return year after year to rest your soul. This spot is great for ocean swimming or wading as well as for snorkeling or scuba diving. But be prepared to just sit back in your beach chair with your toes dug into the warm sand while the warm summer breeze caresses your cares away. Don't be surprised if you catch yourself smiling all the time...we'll know why... Briar Rose main house - 3 BR - 1 king and 2 queen. Main living room has 3 pullout sofas. Sitting area off kitchen has 2 pullout sofas. Bunk house off the deck of this house has 2 futon bunk beds. The garage with this house has 3 futon bunk beds if you wish to use them. We don't call this area living space - it's up to you if you wish to use it. It still has garage doors but it is decorated in a pirate theme. Ariel's Grotto has 2 BR. 1 is a queen and the other has 2 twin beds. There are 3 futons in the living room. The basement is a garage. It has 2 futon bunk beds and several sofas. It is not described as living space. You can use it but that is up to you. Remember, this is set up for our family and we just leave it the way we have it. We don't call the garage areas bedrooms or even sleeping rooms. See photos.

Rocky Haven is one of two charming cottages situated amongst evergreens just 100 feet from the shore. Enjoy cooking fresh Maine lobster and blueberry pie in a full kitchen, or grill in the open air on a gas grill. Experience the sun setting over the pond while listening to loons call. The cottages are 7/10s of a mile from Route 1 on the way to Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park. Rocky Haven is the perfect home away from home while you discover the wonders of coastal Maine. It is a 4 season home with all the amenities (washer & dryer, dishwasher, furnace, and a heat pump/air conditioner in the master bedroom). The living room is the perfect place to sit and relax after a day of adventure in Acadia or kayaking right on the pond, while you watch your favorite program on a 55" 4K flat screen with Sling TV. Listening to the loon calls from the dock or from the porch is a treat any time of day; especially while watching the sun set over the pond. For chilly evenings, a furnace will warm the entire home right up. Rest comfortably on a king sized bed in the lake view loft master bedroom. There are double/twin bunk beds in the other two bedrooms. Each floor has a full bathroom. Water comes from a drilled well with an additional filter system for fresh tasting drinking water, so reliance on lake water is unnecessary. Guests for our two cottages have shared private access to the dock as well as to designated kayaks. Because of the cold season here in Maine, the dock goes in the lake the 2nd week of May and is removed the 1st week of November. While Rocky Haven is a home away from home, Cozy Haven is just a bit smaller but is also a year round cottage from which you can discover the wonders of coastal Maine. You can find it on VRBO too. No pets are allowed on our properties due to family members with severe asthma issues. No exceptions.
